Understand AI testing

What uses AI?
What needs
testing?

An AI testing tool and an application with AI features are different things. The first describes how a test runs. The second describes what needs assessing. Your scope should make both clear.

A delivery method.
A security target.

Both can involve AI. They answer different buying questions.

How the test runs

AI-powered pentesting

AI is used to help investigate software. The target could be an ordinary web application with no AI features. Capabilities depend on the tools, controls and people involved.

  • Which roles and workflows can it exercise?
  • How are findings verified and reviewed?
  • What scope and action limits are enforced?

What the test assesses

AI security testing

The target contains AI features. Assess the surrounding application, data paths, permissions and agent actions, alongside relevant prompt-injection paths.

  • Who can change prompts, models and ingestion?
  • Can one user or tenant reach another’s data?
  • What may an agent do on a user’s behalf?

From an AI feature to an agreed scope

Name the components, accounts and operations. A chat interface alone does not describe the system behind it.

  1. Map the components

Prompts, models, retrieval, ingestion and connected tools.

  2. Exercise the permissions

Ordinary users, administrative roles and tenant boundaries.

  3. Demonstrate and verify

Record observed impact, propose fixes and retest remediation.

An administration feature.
A missing permission check.

Our published case study describes privileged AI operations accepted from an ordinary authenticated user. The assessment identified one missing authorisation gate across the administration surface.

Make the scope explicit

Is this only prompt-injection testing?

No. Pixel assesses administration permissions, tenant isolation, data paths and agent authority as well as relevant injection paths. The agreed scope determines which components and operations are tested.

Does a successful model jailbreak prove a serious vulnerability?

Assess the consequence in the surrounding system. A policy violation, data disclosure and unauthorised tool action are different outcomes. Findings need evidence and severity appropriate to the demonstrated impact.

Does this certify our AI compliance?

No. Pixel provides technical security testing, not legal advice, certification or a conformity assessment. Findings can support your governance work; they do not establish compliance by themselves.
